Funding
In the UK (England) there are several types of nursery / childcare funding from the government. The amount you get depends mainly on your child’s age and whether you work or receive certain benefits.
Free 15 Hours (for most families)
If your child is 3 or 4 years old, you automatically get:
-
15 hours of free childcare per week
-
For 38 weeks per year (school term time)
-
Available at nurseries, preschools, or childminders. (GOV.UK)
This is called “universal entitlement” and almost all families qualify.
Free 30 Hours (working parents)
If both parents work (or a single parent works), you may get:
-
30 hours free childcare per week
-
For 38 weeks per year
-
For children aged 9 months to 4 years (rolled out fully by 2025). (GOV.UK)
Basic eligibility:
-
Each parent earns at least about £183 per week (minimum wage equivalent).
-
Each earns less than £100,000 per year. (GOV.UK)
15 Hours for 2-Year-Olds (low-income families)
Some 2-year-olds can get 15 hours free if the family receives benefits such as:
-
Universal Credit (low income)
-
Income Support
-
Jobseeker’s Allowance
-
Support for children with disabilities
-
Looked-after children
This is called “Early Learning for 2-year-olds.” (GOV.UK)
